As many artists, I received my first training in art with required
art history and appreciation in college. After college I continued
my
education
in the arts through various professional organizations while owning
and operating a professional photography studio and a professional
picture framing business. I continued to collect art throughout my
professional life.
After collecting pottery for over 20 years I took my first pottery
class 6 years ago, & found my passion. I had already established a
sense of what good pottery is by my years of collecting. I knew the
shapes & weight & feel of pots made by many well-known
potters/friends. It was not long before I was able to put together
my newfound skills & my innate sense of quality. I continue to take
workshops & classes in a variety of techniques with many well-known
instructors.
I enjoy the exploration of different processes. I find that, as in
many aspects of life, I need new challenges to keep my artwork
interesting for me. I have explored low fire earthenware, majolica,
burnished earthenware, and high fire stoneware. I create both
functional and nonfunctional works.
My
favorite process remains Raku and specifically Naked Raku. Naked
Raku is a process using no glaze. The bare clay is highly burnished
with a stone before firing. The surface reflects light to reveal a
deep satin finish that feels like satin. Its sensual look and feel
draws the viewers since of feel and emotion. It enhances the
feminine sculptural form, which I enjoy developing in my work. I
also love the interesting and immediate results from alternative
firing techniques. And, like most potters, I just love to play with
fire. So far the fire gods have been good to me.
